Soil

Risk evaluation

It is obligatory to check some business sites for soil pollution. When they are put up for sale, for example, or when the industrial activity poses a pollution risk. When soil pollution is discovered, an obligation to perform soil remediation only comes into effect when there is a genuine risk to humans or the environment. VITO is experienced in risk evaluation for soil pollutants and has, on the instructions of OVAM, developed the methods which are currently being imposed in Flanders.

Determining soil pollution
In order to perform a soil investigation, VITO experts take samples at the site. Our many years of experience with drilling and sampling ensures that this takes place in accordance with established protocols.
In order to evaluate the degree of pollution, we use established analysis methods, potentially in combination with alternative methods we have developed ourselves. We evaluate the results of our analyses against legislation.
The VITO laboratory is the best equipped laboratory in Flanders to analyse waste materials, soil, water and air. It is the government’s reference laboratory.

Are there risks to humans?
If soil pollution is established, then a second evaluation is needed. This involves checking whether a risk is posed to public health. VITO develops reliable and validated dispersion and exposure models. We combine these with an in-depth insight into the toxicological impacts and possibly with impact-oriented measurements (bioassays). This helps us to realise an integral risk assessment. We also support you in establishing a cost-effective soil remediation plan.
