Soil

Risk abatement

Your client has a soil pollution problem. Dispersion and exposure models indicate the risks to the population and the environment. Your client must now present a remediation plan to the government, and thus turns to you for help. VITO collaborates with you in finding the most cost-effective approach.

Selecting the right remediation technique
You present a number of techniques in your proposed soil remediation plan. VITO will evaluate their feasibility. Our structured advice is based on insights obtained from many years of research into pollutants and remediation techniques. We carry out batch and column tests in our well-equipped laboratory. We then use the conclusions derived from these tests to define a pilot installation. This results in soil remediation which is technically and economically feasible. Together with you, we provide your client with an satisfactory result.

Neutralising risks through effective land management
Diffuse soil and water pollutants and pollutants at mega-sites are difficult to control. Well-considered land and water management would be beneficial. VITO evaluates which combinations of remediation techniques help to prevent dispersion and neutralise risks. We examine the soil as well as the ground water, and the relationship between these. The scientifically substantiated techniques we employ include utilising parts of the site in another manner, phytoremediation, natural attenuation and biological remediation.

Remediating effectively and efficiently
Some techniques, such as soil excavation, are not feasible because there is insufficient space at the site. Other techniques, like pumping ground water, are financially disadvantageous. An alternative is to neutralise health risks using biological or physicochemical in situ techniques, possibly in combination with natural attenuation. This involves close monitoring of the dispersion of ground water and pollution. VITO has the multidisciplinary knowledge needed to successfully complete this kind of remediation.
