Testing facilities

Measurements provide valuable information. Modern testing facilities are also an essential element when developing solutions which are custom-made for the client. VITO therefore continuously invests in testing infrastructure.

Thermotechnical laboratory for innovative energy techniques
The thermotechnical lab is used to test the performance and applicability of new and innovative energy techniques by way of practical simulation. In principle any technique which produces electricity, heat and/or cold can be tested here for energy and environmental impacts. Besides classic stationary tests (with consistent load and water temperatures), the lab also offers the possibility to test under dynamic conditions.

Vehicles and their emissions: tested on your behalf
E²Track offers VITO an effective and modular test benchmark to evaluate hybrid and electrical float lines and their components. Energy consumption, emissions and energy flow are measured dynamically.

HEVAN is a fully operational electric hybrid van which is used as a mobile testing platform to test and develop vehicle components.

VOEMLow is a testing device to measure vehicle emissions and consumption very precisely . VOEMLow can be used for stationary measurements and as an on-board measuring device for on-the-road measurements. A variety of vehicle and engine parameters can be monitored simultaneously with emissions.

Hydrogen and fuel cells: towards a sustainable energy supply
VITO’s testing facilities offer the possibility to test (in particular) hydrogen technology and fuel cells under controlled conditions. This infrastructure allows VITO to offer you the following:

  • The possibility to determine the dynamic properties of fuel cells with a view to system integration 
  • The possibility to optimise control strategies for fuel cells 
  • The possibility to develop customised controllers (PLC, embedded software) 
  • Innovative instrumentation: digital sensors and actuators 
  • The development and construction of customised test benchmarks

Electricity and lighting
VITO is able to call upon a wide range of software tools and testing equipment to support the development projects of our clients:

  • Finite elements analysis, design of print plates, etc.  
  • Development tools for micro controllers and software 
  • EMC measurement equipment  
  • Testing of batteries and ultracaps 
  • Light measurements

Underground storage of energy
Projects concerning underground energy storage must be correctly dimensioned and executed. Thus a good insight into the thermal characteristics of the ground is essential. VITO developed the TRT measurement vehicle (thermal response test) so that parameters, needed to evaluate the possibilities of underground energy storage, can be evaluated on location.
