Air quality

Emissions into the air

You would like to know the emission data of substances into the air of a particular installation or of your entire company. Or further still, the concentration of specific components in the outside air in the surroundings of your company. You would like to take targeted measures to limit emissions and environmental nuisance. Reliable measurements form the basis of an effective approach. VITO uses special techniques for difficult to measure components or complex sources. Furthermore, our laboratory implements an internationally certified quality control system.

All source types
Emission measurements are always taken at the source: this determines the quantity of a particular substance emitted by the source during a particular timeframe. VITO adopts an appropriate measurement technique for each source type. We accurately determine the emissions, even for difficult sources. VITO measures and analyses:

  • Guided sources (e.g. chimney)
  • Diffuse sources (e.g. an entire production line)
  • Mobile sources (e.g. vehicles)

Accurate, even for very specific components or under difficult circumstances
The type of source is not the only factor which determines the measurement. High temperatures, interference from other substances or the unstable nature of components often make measurements considerably more difficult. VITO has extensive experience in sampling substances under difficult conditions. Accurate measurements, free from interferences.

  • Fume gas components (SOx, NOx, CO, CO2, O2, etc.)
  • Particulate matter (also hygroscopic)
  • Dioxins
  • Volatile organic substances - VOS (overall parameters or component-specific)
  • Special components (formaldehyde, nitric oxide, methane, ethylene, CFC's, etc.)

And the quality of ambient air
Besides emissions from a source, a direct measurement of the quality of ambient air may also be necessary in order to address a problem comprehensively. VITO has considerable experience in active as well as passive air sampling, outside as well as in workplaces, and for a wide variety of components (volatile substances, dioxins, particulate matter, odour, ...). Furthermore, VITO has considerable experience in deposition measurements (e.g. acid deposition, dioxins).
