Fine dust particles or aerosols in ambient air may not only be problematic, but also harmful. However, scientific knowledge about the source, composition and effects is still somewhat limited. VITO has been performing strategic and policy-supporting research into particulate matter for many years. And for companies we have also developed into a reference point for problems which they encounter.
Limiting exposure
Prevention is the best way to protect your employees and the environment against particulate matter. VITO examines which materials or processes may present risks. If necessary, VITO can fully evaluate your process, identify and quantify the emission points, and map and predict the dispersion of particulate matter in the environment. We also advise you on emission-reducing strategies.
Complexity unravelled
Particulate matter (also known as aerosols) is complex and defined ambiguously. It is the collective name for liquid and solid particles in the air, such as smog and soot. Sources vary greatly and compositions vary depending on the location and time.
On the instructions of companies and governments, VITO studies the characteristics of aerosols. We establish the origin of particulate matter based on an analysis of the chemical components of the dust particles or based on the physical characteristics of the dust particles. Based on the physical and chemical characteristics much can be said about the potential risks to public health.
Ensuring correct measurements
Accurate measurement takes into account the composition of the aerosols as well as the environment in which they are found.
- Measurements for companies and governments: due to our experience we know which device provides the best results in a specific environment.
- Dynamic measurements: we develop measurement devices which are easy to transport by bicycle, car or tram. This allows you to measure the actual exposure of a mobile person who travels in various environments.
- Validation of measurement equipment: we create particulate matter under controlled conditions and then verify the reliability of devices which are currently available on the market.
VITO translates the measurement results into concrete impacts on humans and the environment. To achieve this, we implement various scientific disciplines.
