Putting a substance or product on the market? Then you are required to first submit a dossier to the competent authorities that includes the results of (eco)toxicity tests. VITO is internationally recognised for its use and development of alternatives in toxicity research (www.cardam.eu (new window))! Included in VITO's toolbox are also traditional ecotoxicity tests. These tests are conducted according to internationally recognised quality standards.
Until now, animal testing has often been the only recognised way to study the toxicity of chemicals. Ethical and economic objections demand reliable alternatives. The new REACH regulation (registration and authorisation of chemicals at EU level) prescribes avoiding animal testing if possible, and recommends alternative tests. The cosmetics industry is even faced with a complete prohibition of animal tests for safety evaluation of their ingredients and products. Through collaboration with stakeholders VITO is involved in the development and validation of an extensive range of alternative in-vitro tests. You can also turn to VITO for performing these tests for safety assessment of compounds, consumer products or complex environmental samples.
