Chemicals enter the environment via natural sources and as a result of human activities such as industry and transport. Thus, humans are indirectly exposed to chemicals via air, water, ground, foodstuffs or via direct contact.
The models used by VITO allow you to calculate the chemical safety of your processes and the associated exposure to people and the environment. They also allow evaluation of the entire chain, from intake of the chemical substance from the environment, to finished product. The exposure is compared with existing test values in order to evaluate it in specific situations (environment, process techniques, packaging). The models also allow detection of possible sources of contamination, evaluation of the effect of policy measures and substantiating relevant legislation. The use of location-specific information (chemical measurements, biomonitoring) allow the evaluations to be adapted to the concrete issue.
