Risk identification
For purposes of classification and labelling of chemicals it is important to know their dangerous properties. For this reason a documented dossier has to be submitted to the authorities describing and identifying potential harmful properties based on test results. For this hazard assessment standard tests are described in protocols provided by international authorities (OECD, ISO…).
VITO offers a number of these tests that can identify toxicological hazrdous properties: in vitro technology and standard ecotoxicity tests are used to identify the intrinsic properties of chemicals and derivatives ( toxicity, genotoxicity, irritating properties, corrosive properties, hormonal distrurbance, ecotoxicity..).
VITO encourages the use of these same biological tests to identify the risk characteristics of environmental samples. Suitable extraction techniques are used to isolate the desired fractions from environmental samples and study their hazardous properties. This can provide important information for quality control (e.g. concerning the life cycle of recycled material, when changing processes or products in processes, environmental monitoring...) and for a transparant and relevant hazard classification of different materials (e.g. classification of waste, waste water, polluted soil, sediment, air particles...).
