People spend 80 - 90% of their time indoors, most of which in their own homes. Indoor air quality is often worse than outdoor air quality. The health effects associated with exposure indoors is also receiving greater attention due to the trend toward sustainable building, better insulation and the need for active ventilation. Typical sources include emissions from building materials, paints, consumer products (air fresheners, cleaning products, insect extermination …), and of course, infiltration of the outside air.
VITO can help you assess exposure to one or more sources, determine the relative significance of the source, and evaluate the possible health risks. For this, we use diverse measurement and modelling techniques. In modelling indoor exposure, ‘real life’ measurements such as personal sampling, measurements in homes and emission tests in controlled test rooms are used in combination with information on usage and time activity patterns and home characteristics (including ventilation). VITO follows an integrated and multidisciplinary approach in order to provide an optimal solution to the problem at hand.
