“PARTIAL SOLUTIONS WON’T DO: CITIES REQUIRE A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH” 

Cities cover only 1% of the earth's surface, yet are home to half of the world's population. Large amounts of people working and living together on a relatively limited surface area: the result is usually a significant ecological footprint that endangers the quality of life, vitality and accessibility of our cities. The challenges are enormous, say Guy Vekemans and Yves De Weerdt of VITO: “In a city, all needs come together in a complex urban system. Only comprehensive solutions are truly sustainable in such a context, that much is clear. With a new ‘Drivers of Urban Sustainability’ Task Force, we are focusing on the systems approach our cities need.”
