HEAT ISLAND EFFECT STUDIED

The temperature in an urban area is on average higher than the surrounding countryside. This phenomenon is known as the urban heat island effect (UHI). During heat waves, this effect is even more pronounced, which can lead to heat stress and health problems. VITO has developed a computer model that simulates the heating up of cities and predicts the effect of climate measures.
