Smart grids soon to be tested
After years of preparatory work, research on smart grids or intelligent energy networks in Flanders passed a new milestone. Smart grids are the energy networks of the future, tailored to real-life trends such as the boom in renewable energy and the growing use of electric vehicles. Project Linear, a joint initiative of VITO and the K.U. Leuven, is studying how the available amount of renewable energy can be optimally used by intelligently controlling energy using and producing devices. And how all of this can be fit into a global energy network. The end point of Linear is a true premiere for Flanders: a large-scale field test in which the energy consumption of real-life users is actively controlled.
