In contrast to the Flemish government, VITO has no real structural link with the federal (Belgian) government. Nonetheless, VITO’s broad scientific expertise is regularly used in Federal government services, such as the federal department of Public Health and the Environment, the Federal Food Agency (FAVV) and the federal department of Science Policy. This often takes place in collaboration with a partner from Wallonia or Brussels. Some recent noteworthy research projects, which have been performed on the instructions of or in collaboration with the aforementioned federal services, are:
- health impacts of air fresheners;
- organising efficient inspections of dangerous substances in E-waste;
- developing economic models for the prediction of energy consumption in the industrial sector;
- potential health risks from cycling in cities;
- various specialised analyses (dioxins, PAKs, PCBs) in various foodstuffs.
