Given our status as research institute, VITO strives being at the forefront of the latest analytical developments. We have been building up an extensive set of intruments, ranging from routine instruments to high level analytical equipment. Whereas in the past the focus was more on instruments with a high sensitivity, we now mainly focus on instruments to develop screening methods. Sustainability is of major importance for VITO and the concept-“seeing more by analyzing less” perfectly fits within this strategy. Furthermore this innovative approach allows us to generate much more information within the same timeframe. To reduce costs, we have purchased instruments allowing to automate sample preparation and others even making it unnecessary. The analytical expertise within our unit lies within organic and inorganic analyses. Recently a proteomics platform has been started in collaboration with the university of Antwerp. The unit Materials is specialized in microscopic and spectroscopic analyses.
