Transport & Mobility
An activity-based approach for surveying and modelling travel behaviour
Activity-based transportation models have set the standard for modelling travel demand. The main concept behind these models is that travel demand is derived from activities that individuals and households need or wish to perform. This project attempted to introduce computer-aided instruments (GPS and computer-aided services) when conducting travel behaviour surveys, thereby allowing activity data to be collected over a long period of time. To this end, VITO introduced a vehicle embedded data logger (“VEDETT”) that monitored travel behaviour using GPS, with all data sent to a central server via GPRS transmission.
