At the request of the Flemish environmental authorities, VITO, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and L'Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) established a methodology to examine the environmental impact of a vehicle using a single indicator, the Ecoscore. This well-to-wheel approach results in a score from 0 (very environmentally unfriendly) to 100 (no environmental impact). The ecoscore is technology-independent, which means it can be calculated for vehicles that run on different fuels and with different propulsion technologies. At the request of the Flemish, Walloon and Brussels Capital Regions, VITO has been maintaining the www.ecoscore.be (new window) database since 2006. Data available at this site includes the ecoscore, emission data and the technical specifications of all cars available in Belgium. In addition, VITO conducts related studies in collaboration with the VUB, such as an analysis of the environmental characteristics of the Belgian fleet, new and used vehicles registered, etc.
