Doctorate @ VITO

Obtaining a doctorate @ VITO

Have you recently graduated with a Masters degree in engineering or bioengineering sciences, industrial sciences, social sciences, physical sciences or medical sciences?
Do you want to further expand your career possibilities with a doctorate?
Then you should certainly have a look at the opportunities offered by VITO!

VITO supports candidates who wish to carry out four years of research under the supervision of a university sponsor and VITO as co-sponsor, which will lead to obtaining a doctorate and is linked with VITO-research.

There are different options:

  • a VITO doctoral grant;
  • a FWO VITO research mandate;
  • a doctorate in the framework of European cooperation;
  • a doctorate as a VITO employee.

a) VITO doctoral grant

VITO annually defines a number of doctorate subjects in support of VITO research. These subjects are carefully selected beforehand in the framework of a strategic cooperation with the university’s sponsor. The subject and the sponsor are defined from the start. The subjects of these doctorates are usually strongly application-oriented.

The next jury will happen on March 01, 2012. Dossiers for this jury have to reach us by Februari 15, 2012.

b) FWO VITO doctoral mandates

The FWO also supports VITO with specific doctoral mandates. For these mandates only, a strategic domain is assigned, in which a sponsor and/or candidate can determine a subject. You start this procedure through a conventional application for an FWO research mandate. Furthermore, VITO offers you an additional opportunity to start a funded doctorate.

c) Doctorates in the framework of European projects

If you are more focussed on international issues, a doctorate in the framework of a European project could be a unique opportunity for you. VITO participates in European networks where doctorate mandates in other countries are regularly offered.

d) Doctorate as VITO-employee

As an employee of VITO you can carry out much research worthy of a doctorate. At VITO you will be given the opportunity to effectively transfer this work across to a doctorate. How this can be organised for you will be verified internally.
