The purpose of VITO is to perform research aimed at stimulating sustainable development and reinforcing the economic and social fibre in Flanders. Besides contractual work and reference tasks, this is done by way of performing its own defined research programma(Organised Scientific Research, OSR). In doing so, VITO works closely with universities and other research institutions, both nationally and internationally.

Quality control
The VITO activities take place in accordance with international quality standards (incl. ISO9001-2000, GLP, …). VITO research is also regularly subjected to a critical evaluation by international specialists (incl. for co-financing) and scientific advice councils (strategic advice council or SAC). VITO scientists also publishes widely in international peer reviewed journals.
Financing
The Flemish government provides substantial basic funding for VITO. The allocation covers a sizeable part of the research costs. The remaining costs are covered by additional funding from local, regional, national and international governments and industry.
