Project Objectives
In the framework of this project we will investigate the possibilities of a small unmanned aerial vehicle for use as a mobile sensor platform. The main aim is to develop a versatile system that allows fast synchronised data acquisition in three dimensions. Where nowadays environmental parameters are either measured at the source and at the earth’s surface, this platform will allow to explore the spatio-temporal distribution of certain parameters (eg. CO2, black carbon).
Methodology
An in-depth analysis is conducted to study the possibilities of different platforms and sensors. Based on the results and Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components, an operational mobile platform is developed. Simultaneously, COTS sensors are selected and a communication interface is developed to allow in-flight data processing and transmission. Based on Open Standards (OGC, eg. SensorML, SOS), data will be transmitted to a ground processing unit, processed and made available on-line in real-time.
Results
The results were summarised in a workshop, presentations and poster on different conferences. A customisable versatile measurement platform with real-time data transmission and processing capabilities. Focus went to the integration of a black carbon sensor on a versatile VTOL UAS. A full workflow was implemented that allows the acquisition, storage, processing and distribution of time synchronised data (BC concentration) and metadata (position, attitude, pressure, temperature, etc.).
