Project Objectives
The ENDELEO project aims at promoting good environmental governance in Kenya by providing access to updated remote sensing based information on the status of the country's ecosystems. In the first phase of the ENDELEO project (March 2007 – June 2009) Kenyan stakeholders were determined, key environmental issues were identified and analyzed, and a prototype of an automatically updated remote sensing based monitoring website was developed (http://endeleo.vgt.vito.be).The objective of the project extension ‘ENDELEO/OPS’ is to increase impact of the ENDELEO monitoring system, to maintain and enhance the involvement of the Kenyan and international user community and to assure continuity of the services by transferring the system to the local partner.
Methodology
- The website contains a number of dynamic tools, enabling the continuous monitoring of the vegetation status in Kenya. The website is maintained and vegetation indicators are updated on a 10 daily basis.
- Based on the recommendations made during the past user meeting and steering committee, adjustments are made to the monitoring tools.
- To assure sustainability, it is essential that the monitoring system is transferred to and operated by a Kenyan institute instead of hosted at VITO. The necessary hardware, software and datasets are provided to run a mirror website at DRSRS. The staff will be trained to enable them to maintain the website independently.
- The users are supported with specific questions related to the ENDELEO monitoring website through the Help Desk. The FAQ section is extended with solutions resulting from the Help Desk. New case studies, illustrating the practical use of the tools, are regularly added.
- The Kenyan user community will be involved as much as possible and new potential users will be informed about ENDELEO. Case studies are worked out together, and included in the newsletter or presented in the concluding user workshop.
- Awareness is also increased to the international community. Announcements are send to various international organizations involved in environmental management.
(Expected) Results
- To raise awareness and basic understanding on the potentials of remote sensing for environmental monitoring at organisations which have not been using satellite data before.
- To enable the Kenyan community to maintain the services independently.
- To awaken interest to expand the service to other African countries.
VITO Contribution
- To provide 10 daily updates of vegetation indicators
- To maintain and improve the monitoring website
- To provide support through the helpdesk
- To help users to work out a case study
- To contribute to the demo’s and workshop
- To support DRSRS with the installation of the mirror website
