Project Objectives
Agriculture plays an important role in the development agenda of Malawi, both to assure food security as well as to stimulate the economy. FICA (Flemish International Cooperation Agency) supports efforts in the field of Agriculture by contributing to several small scale projects, such as rehabilitation of irrigation schemes, and by participating to the donor platform. The objectives of this study for FICA are:

  • To evaluate the potentials to produce remote sensing based information relevant for the agricultural development in Malawi in general.
  • To provide practical data to optimize the management of small scale irrigation schemes.

Methodology

  • Make an inventory and organise existing spatial information on agriculture in Malawi.
  • Map differences in agricultural characteristics between the administrative units.
  • Give insight in the spatial-dynamic aspects of agriculture in Malawi for the past 10 to 20 years.
  • Identify possible trends and anomalies in the vegetation conditions, to localize areas frequently prone to  crop failure.
  • Make a map and inventory of the irrigation infrastructure and follow up the management of the schemes throughout the season.

(Expected) Results
A portfolio that demonstrates which remote sensing studies VITO can provide to support and evaluate national and local initiatives in the field of agriculture. The outcome of the studies should help to understand the impact of policies and ongoing projects and identify vulnerable areas to focus on in future initiatives.
