Project Objectives
Geoland2 intends to constitute a major step forward in the implementation of the GMES Land Monitoring Core Service (LMCS). The three components (Local, Continental and Global) of the LMCS are addressed.
The goal of Geoland2 is:
- to prepare, validate and demonstrate pre-operational service chains and products that will underpin the LMCS, and
- to propose and demonstrate a concrete functional organisation of the LMCS.
BioPar produces in near-real time and off-line a series of bio-geophysical parameters describing the global vegetation state, the radiation budget at the surface and the water cycle, derived from MR and LR sensor data with a time frequency of product update on the order of 1 - 30 days.
Methodology
The service features global estimates of:
- NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index)
- NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index)
- LAI (Leaf Area Index)
- fAPAR (Fraction of Absorbed PAR)
- fCover (Fractional Cover)
- Albedo (Directional hemisphere and Bi-hemispherical reflectance)
- DMP (Dry Matter Productivity)
- Burnt area and Seasonality
- Water Bodies and Seasonality
Geoland2 will generate these products in NRT (Near Real Time) for the period 2008-2012 and will reprocess the products for the period 1998-2008. Products are generated in resolutions of 250m to 1km at 10-daily intervals based on different sensors: SPOT-VEGETATION, METOP-AVHRR, NASA-AVHRR LTDR, MODIS L2 and all products are available at the Geoland2 SDI (Spatial Data Infrastructure).
(Expected) Results
The geoland2 deliverables are:
- the organisation of a production network,
- the building of operational processing lines,
- the demonstration of services and products,
- the support on continuity and increase of the land user platform.
VITO Contribution
VITO is responsible for the development of pre-operational processing lines, including Quality Assurance monitoring; operating these processing lines for Near-Real Time (NRT) and Off-line (Historical) processing and disseminating these products via the European Land SDI Portal. On top, VITO also implements the processing lines for Water and Burnt Area.
