Project Objectives
Geoland2 CROP aims to provide objective, real-time information on crop yields and areas in support to EC policies in the field of agriculture (Common Agricultural Policy) and food security. It is a demonstration of concept in preparation of the future GMES global crop monitoring service, which will be part of an operational GMES land monitoring core service. Focus is on the development and testing of new products and services and the provision of a utility assessment.
Main objectives of CROP-CIS are:
- to contribute to the development of (pre-)operational techniques for the timely assessment of regional crop yield, crop area and crop production at a global scale;
- to assess the usefulness and quality of products issued from the Geoland2-BioPar and SATChMo Core Information Services;
- to ensure an efficient interface with the final Users in this field of application: DG AGRI, AIDCO (and RELEX family), but also UN Organisations such as FAO and WFP.
(Expected) Results
Validated methods and tools for a future GMES global crop monitoring service for providing near-real time information on crop yield outlook and estimated cultivated areas.
VITO Contribution
- Production of crop maps and area estimates for test regions in China (North China plain) and Ukraine.
- Validation of the results with areas statistics
- Documentation of test results (performance, bottlenecks,…) in preparation of an operational service
