Project Objectives
Puerto Rico’s land use is fragmented, tends towards urbanisation over the whole of the island. This places the Puerto Rico Planning Boards for immense challenges.
A land use modeling system, Xplorah, has been developed. It can be used to evaluate different development scenarios, if it is provided with sufficient land use maps (two at least). This project has generated a land use map for 2003 and for 2009/2010. The latter land use map is produced at a higher spatial resolution (60 m in stead of 240 m), so that it can also be used at a local scale.
Methodology
- The 2003 land use map is based on a recent land cover map and visual interpretation.
- The 2009/2010 land use map is based on several improvements:
- higher resolution at the base (15 m)
- use of contextual image classification
- field visits.
(Expected) Results
- Land use maps (at 60m and 240 m cell size) for two epochs
- Detailed imagery for the whole island
- A method for generating future land use maps
VITO Contribution
- Co-ordination and quality control of image acquisition and land use mapping
- Development of an automated land use mapping system based on high resolution imagery, including validation and comparison to interactive land use mapping
Partners
- University of Puerto Rico, Graduate School of Planning (Puerto Rico)
- USDA Forest Service, International Institute for Tropical Forestry (Puerto Rico)
- GMT GIS (Puerto Rico)
- Fugro Earth Data (U.S.A.)
