Project Objectives
At the moment the CVB/CTIV offers data and basic services to the users by means of its PAF (Processing and Archiving Facility). The raw satellite data are processed by VITO to some standard products, which can be ordered by the users. In this project we want to investigate how we can offer processing power (grid) to the users which is next to the VGT data: a user can then upload his own algorithms on this grid where the data is accessible. Hence a user will not be obliged to transfer massive amounts of data to his premises for processing it, but will be able to run his algorithms on the VITO grid, close to the data. This also offers new possibilities for real-time processing and could provide processing power to users in e.g. developing countries who are now often forced restricted to work with the standard products only.
A second objective is to investigate whether a loosely coupled grid between different data providers (e.g. VITO and ESA-ESRIN) allows to run massive multi-mission applications (i.e. involving massive EO data which is geographically spread) in a more efficient way by processing the data where it is and so avoiding to copy all the data to one side.
Methodology
- install and operate a grid with access to the VGT data,
- provide a loosely coupling between grids from different providers (VITO and ESA-ESRIN),
- provide a workflow tool to the users which allows to design and execute processing chains on the grid using the data available on the grid and avoiding to copy large amounts of data by processing the data where it is,
- provide means for researchers to upload own algorithms and (auxiliary) data on the grid and combine this with the data and standard algorithms from VITO in an own processing chain,
- use as much as possible available standards, e.g. WPS (Web Processing Service).
(Expected) Results
After the project VITO should have experience with grid technology as an answer to the challenges mentioned above. We should be able to implement and operate a grid on top of our VGT-PAF and run multi-mission projects more efficiently in the future.
We shall have a clear idea about the missing technology and will communicate this, by means of the technology partners in the project, to the relevant communities.
VITO Contribution
- Describe scenarios, use cases and user requirements.
- Deploy a grid infrastructure at VITO and deploy some EO-processing chains in the grid.
- Demonstrate and consolidate a plan towards operations.

Loosely coupled grids at VITO and ESA provide an opportunity for Principal Investigators to design and execute multi-mission EO-workflows which consume geographically spread data at the different processing centres.
