Project Objectives
Sentinel 3, meant to be fully operational by 2012, should allow to generate synthetic products that mimic those of the existing 1km VGT data products. Sentinel 3 should therefore offer the possibility to extend the VGT baseline product portfolio beyond the year 2012 and, at the same time, improve the spatial resolution of the VGT products to 300 m. The objective of this study is to demonstrate product synergy and the capability to generate VGT-compatible products using the Ocean and Land Colour (OLC) and Sea and Land Surface Temperature (SLST) instruments onboard Sentinel 3. As proxies existing geo-located and co-registered MERIS and AATSR pixel radiances are used.

Methodology

  • Combine MERIS and AATSR data to investigate and establish synergies for land products such as NDVI, LAI, fAPAR, fCover and fire disturbed / burned area.
  • Establish benefits of instrument synergies for e.g. atmospheric correction and cloud / snow / ice discrimination.
  • Investigate ability to reproduce VGT products with similar product performance.
  • Verify accuracy of resulting products using MERIS and AATSR and establish potential product accuracy of Sentinel 3 OLC and SLST.
  • Derive from Sentinel-3 (S3) OLCI/SLSTR Levell data a L1VGT product.

(Expected) Results

  • Evaluation of the impact of key elements of Sentinel 3 design, such as swath geometry, co registration between OLC and SLST pixels, temporal offset between pushbroom OLC and scan derived SLST data.
  • Definition of key VGT product processing chain elements.
  • Synthesis of AATSR and MERIS synergy products, quantitative comparison with VGT products.
  • Evaluation of advantages and disadvantages of the baseline channel suite of the OLC and SLST instruments.
  • Emulate SPOT/VGT-P product
  • Consultancy for ESA/TAS

VITO Contribution

  • Map VGT channels to Sentinel-3 instrument channels
  • Synthesise VGT-like land products at 1.2km and 300m resolution over well characterised land validation targets
  • Evaluate product performance and the advantages/disadvantages of the existing combination of channels for reproducing VGT products
  • Consultancy (CCN)
  • Validation
