Project Objectives
To develop a low-cost sensing system that can determine the 2D-position of persons and number of persons in a room.

Methodology
We use a visual network with thermopile array sensors and distributed signal conditioning and fusion. The number of persons and their location is brought to a central location.

Expected results
Aim is to reach enough momentum to bring this in a VITO spin-out company. Several innovations that we will encounter on the way and are not part of the final aim will be brought separately to valorisation by selling knowledge or out-licensing in coordination with VITO valorisation management.

VITO contribution
Design of the embedded hardware and software, making decisions in sensor choice and the development of distributed fusion algorithms.

Illustration

The central node receives information from the building and displays the current position of inhabitants on a map. Colour coding can be used to indicate events that are cause for alarms.
